On-Going Activities
I am currently drafting a brief book on the role of the military in Ethiopia’s politics from 1900 to the present. Successive Ethiopian regimes have sought the backing of one external power or another basically to build up the military mostly for silencing internal dissent. The implications that this preoccupation with the military and foreign sponsorship had for political and economic development and thus for stability would be the focus of the research. An attempt would also be made to anticipate the various courses that the country’s development could take in order to explore ways of averting the recurrence of institutional break down that have been witnessed since 1900
I have just completed drafting a book entitled Self-determination in the Horn of Africa: A principal for Simultaneous Decentralization and Regional Integration? Which is being considered for publication by the Wilfred Laurie university press. This research was funded by a consortium of European humanitarian and development agencies with special interest in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.
I have submitted a draft chapter entitled “WHAT NEXT IN THE HORN OF AFRICA?”Re-considering the state and self determination” to appear in a book being edited by professor Asafa jalata of University of Tennessee.
Completed Works
Researched and wrote the following papers on the 1998-2000 War between Eritrea and Ethiopia with special emphasis on the causes and implications: 91)”The Ethiopia-Eritrea war and the Role of the UN and the OAU” is being published as a chapter in a book edited by Jane Boulden, professor at Queens University. (2) A variation of this paper will appear in the next issue of Review of African political Economy. (3) “Ethiopia: the path to war and the consequences of peace,” to appear in a book being edited by Martin Plaut.
Wrote the book, The Ethiopian State at the crossroads, (published by the Red Sea press in 1999), in which I argue that failure to respect human rights, as stipulated in the Charter that established the post-Mengistu transitional government, played a pivotal role in derailing the plan to democratize Ethiopia. I also argue that the only rule of law could end the continuation of armed strife and the possibility of a breakdown. The book has been well received by scholars, diplomats, and activists interested in Ethiopian politics.

I work with groups trying to promote dialogue between the Ethiopian government and various armed opponents on a continuous basis. At the same time, I attend conferences and present papers dealing with security issues in the Horn of Africa
