Ethiopia government criticised over Oromo protests

The US-based Human Rights Watch says Ethiopian security forces have killed at least 140 people taking part in mass anti-government demonstrations since November 2015.

The protests have been sparked by fears over government plans to extend control into the Oromia region which could displace Oromo farmers.

Journalists have also been detained for reporting on the protests, and now, the Ethiopian English language magazine, the Addis Standard, has released an edition accusing the government of stifling public dissent by killing its own people.
