IAAF Diamond League Shanghai: Genzebe Dibaba wins 5,000m

SHANGHAI, China (Sporting Alert) — Jamaicans Warren Weir and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce collected short sprint titles, while Grenadian Kirani James raced away with the men’s 400m at the Diamond League Meeting Shanghai on Saturday. The Following are the complete results from the IAAF big paying track and field meeting.

Fraser-Pryce sped to victory in the women’s 100-metres in a world-leading 10.93 seconds, beating Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria who ran 11.00 and Carmelita Jeter of the United States, who clocked 11.08 for third.

Weir, the bronze medal winner in the 200m behind Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake at the London Olympic Games last year, won that event in 20.18secs, beating USA’s Justin Gatlin (20.21) and Jamaica’s Jason Young (20.22).

The men’s 400m went to Olympic champion James and he dominated LaShawn Merritt of USA and Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic to win in a meeting record equalling time and world-leading effort of 44.02.

In other results in Shanghai, Francine Niyonsaba (Burundi) powered down the stretch to win the women’s 800m in 2:00.33, Genzebe Dibaba (Ethiopia) got the better of Meseret Defar (Ethiopia) and Viola Jelagat Kibiwot (Kenya) to win the women’s 5000m in 14:45.92, while, Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia took the women’s Pole Vault competitionwith a clearance of 4.70m.
