Twin Cities Daily Planet #OromoProtests | Peaceful protests in Ethiopia met by violent state action

Dozens of students are killed by Ethiopian military forces following peaceful student demonstrations against the government’s Addis expansion plan that would encroach into Oromia state. Protesters want to retain a political and cultural identity within Oromia state. When implemented these expansions will threaten the livelihoods and independence of the Oromo peoples. [Audio below]

Ayantu Tibeso, a writer; and Amane Badhasso, the president of the International Oromo Youth Association talk about the details of the Addis expansion plans known formally as the Integrated Development Master Plan. Tibeso and Baddhasso also discuss in detail the historical framework within which Oromos have existed in Ethiopia.
