When editing my student profile, I checked to see if Oromo was an option when selecting a choice for language. Thankfully it was, however, the word “Galla” was written next to it in brackets.

My name is Guutanne Hordofaa and I am a student at York University studying African Studies. When editing my student profile, I checked to see if Oromo was an option when selecting a choice for language. Thankfully it was, however, the word “Galla” was written next to it in brackets. As you all know, the word Galla is a derogatory word and I took much offense in seeing it. I have sent an email to the university asking for them to remove it as an option and to keep Oromo on its own. I am asking for you all to do the same and for students attending universities/colleges anywhere in the world to check their school’s website to see if this exists elsewhere. If there is anyone else who has experienced something similar, please share it with us so we can fight it together.
